JESUS COMMANDS US TO BECOME BORN AGAIN BECAUSE OUR FIRST BIRTH CREATED US IN THE LIKENESS OF SINFUL MAN, AND NOT IN THE IMAGE OF A HOLY GOD.
“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” John 3:7 (KJV)
How many times I have overheard people talking, especially here in the South, and invariably the expressions “we are all children of God” and “we are all made in God’s image” will come up. That sounds nice and comforting, but is it true? If you and I were born in the image of God, then why do we need to become born again? The answer is a very simple one.
When Jesus was teaching Nicodemus some Bible in John 3, he threw this ‘master of Israel’ quite the doctrinal curveball. It so flustered Nicodemus that he just kinda sputters along helplessly, never quite grasping what Jesus is telling him.
“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?” John 3:1-10 (KJV)
Not only does Jesus drop a bomb on Nicodemus, He then asks him how it is possible that Nicodemus is unaware of this simple truth. Evidentially, ol’ Nic is not comparing scripture with scripture. Because if he had, he would have made this connection.
“And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:”Genesis 5:3,4 (KJV)
And there it is, the reason why we must become born again if we wish to enter into the kingdom of God. After Adam and Eve sinned, fell and got kicked out of the Garden of Eden, they started having babies. Babies that down the line eventually became you and I, and guess whose image all those billions of babies were made in? Not God’s image. Adam’s image.
Jesus commands us to become born again because our first birth created us in the likeness of sinful man, and not in the image of a holy God.
“And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.” 1 Corinthians 15:45-50 (KJV)
Adam was made perfect and was given the title deed to the earth, to rule it as God. He was told to subdue it, multiply his seed, and have dominion over all of it. But shortly into his reign, the Devil showed up and did an end-run around Adam, picked off Eve, and caused Adam to lose his right to rule the earth. It was the very first dispensation, and it ended as all dispensations do, in disaster.
“…for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 (KJV)
Flash forward to the New Testament, and we see our apostle Paul talking about how to become a child of God.
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:26-29 (KJV)
THAT’S HOW YOU BECOME A CHILD OF GOD, THAT’S HOW YOU GET GOD’S IMAGE, WHEN YOU BECOME BORN AGAIN IN JESUS CHRIST WHO IS THE VERY IMAGE OF GOD.
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” 2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)
Now you know why Jesus commands us to become born again, because our first birth from father Adam is corrupt. It is also the reason why those who died in the Old Testament, with the exception of the people who were raptured like Enoch and Elijah, went to Abraham’s Bosom instead of Heaven. They were not born again. They were kept safe, but not saved.
Being born again is not some 30-second prayer you say becomes someone tells you to say it. Being born again is acknowledging that you are sick and dying with an incurable disease, and asking God to perform the operation that only He can perform. You have become born again in the most literal sense. You have a brand new spirit that can never, ever again be touched with sin and death.
At the Rapture, God will then give your reborn soul a reborn body to go with it, and that’s how you will exist with Him for all eternity. source
