๐Ÿ’ Ballet, Happiness, and Marriage

๐Ÿ’ Ballet, Happiness, and Marriage

If you want a great relationship, learn to showcase your spouse.
Famed Russian-born ballet choreographer George Balanchine once said, โ€œBallet is woman.โ€ The best male dancers recognize that their role is all about showcasing the female dancerโ€™s beauty, particularly duringย pas de deuxโ€”couplesโ€™ dancing.
People generally go to the ballet to see the beautiful form, grace, balance, coordination, and strength of the female lead, but all of those qualities are even better showcased when the ballerina has a male dancer who can set her up, …

๐Ÿ’ก ๐ŸŽ„ Navigating the Holidays as an Adult Child of Divorce

At Christmas, decisions for an adult child of divorce become especially difficult, with both parents vying for your loyalty and attention.
I never wanted a stepmom. And I certainly never wanted my kids to have a stepgrandmother.
But when my first daughter was 6 weeks old, my mom left my dad. It had been a long time coming. And from every professionalโ€™s advice, he certainly deserved it. No one faulted her for it.
I was glad they waited so long to end their marriage. …

๐Ÿ’ก How Can I Let Go of the Mom Guilt?

๐Ÿ’ก How Can I Let Go of the Mom Guilt?

Guilt doesnโ€™t freshen us and give lifeโ€”it suffocates us and takes more than we have to give.
I wanted to cry when I realized I forgot to send a snack with my kid to school. No, she isnโ€™t in preschool or kindergarten, and she didnโ€™t even seem to care. Honestly, the urge to cryย wasย a bit ridiculous. But it was one more thing to add to that steaming pile of mom guilt in the corner of my mind. …

๐ŸŽƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐ŸŽ„ Body Image and the Holidays

How do we find the holy balance of treating our bodies like temples, but not to the extent that we become health-obsessed this holiday season?
Ah, the holidaysโ€”when weโ€™re bombarded with all things buttery and comforting. It begins the week of Halloween, with the deluge of sugary bite-sized treats my daughters bring home and it ends around January 2nd . . . or 5th . . . or 8th.
Or whenever I get tired of squeezing into my jeans. …

๐Ÿ’ก Why Your Relationship With Your Child Matters

๐Ÿ’ก Why Your Relationship With Your Child Matters

You have the privilege of growing a child who knows the love of God personally and knows how to love people well.
Godโ€™s first choice for receiving and experiencing love is the family. Warmly snuggled in this incubator, love nurtures life, feeds souls, and calls forth the blossoming flower of Godโ€™s unique individual design in every person He has created. Then love calls for love to be given in return.
Home is where a child takes the first tentative steps from receiving love to giving love. …

๐Ÿ’ก Disciplining Your Children Is Challenging, but Vital

๐Ÿ’ก Disciplining Your Children Is Challenging, but Vital

Seeing the fruit of correcting your children requires delayed gratification.
The last thing I (Jason) want to hear from my wife as I walk through the door at the end of a hard day are these words: โ€œWe have a situation. You need to deal with it.โ€ But it happens.
I remember one evening when one of our sons was 7. I had given him a pocketknife, thinking he was ready to handle that kind of responsibility (in my defense, …

๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Dutch Carpenter Built A Life-Sized Replica Of Noahโ€™s Ark And Plans To Sail It To Israel

A Dutch carpenter who built a life-sized replica of Noahโ€™s Ark has announced plans to sail the 2500-ton vessel to Israel.
Creation scientist Ken Hammย built a replica of Noahโ€™s Ark in Kentucky, and that isย an amazing sight to behold. But the Ark Encounter theme park is stationary. Dutch carpenterย Johan Huibersย has also built a replica of Noahโ€™s Ark, but his vessel is mobile. Now he is looking to sail his ship all the way back to the motherland, …

โš ๏ธ Two Traps to Avoid: “If Only” and “What If?”

โš ๏ธ Two Traps to Avoid: “If Only” and “What If?”

When these issues dominate my thoughts, I succumb to selfishness and fear.
In each season of my life, Iโ€™ve found myself falling into two mental traps which are not helpful. One is the โ€œIf onlyโ€ syndrome, and the other is the โ€œWhat if?โ€ syndrome.
Hereโ€™s how โ€œIf onlyโ€ might express itself:

โ€œIf only I had a husband.โ€
โ€œIf only I had more money.โ€
โ€œIf only my husband would act likeโ€ฆโ€
โ€œIf only my husband (or I) had a good job.โ€
โ€œIf only we had a different house.โ€
โ€œIf only my parents (or his) understood.โ€
โ€œIf only my child would sleep through the night.โ€
โ€œIf only I had a really close friend.โ€
โ€œIf only I didnโ€™t come from such a wounded past.โ€
โ€œIf only I wasnโ€™t stuck in this place.โ€
โ€œIf only I was free of this disease.โ€
โ€œIf only I knew how to handle my teen.โ€
โ€œIf only I didnโ€™t have to do this.โ€
โ€œIf only I didnโ€™t struggle with this.โ€

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ‚ When You Don’t Feel Like Giving Thanks…

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ‚ When You Don’t Feel Like Giving Thanks…

Thanksgiving can be a difficult reminder of the struggles we face, but there is comfort in the promises to come.
Helen Keller had every reason to bitterly complain about lifeโ€”she was blind and deaf as the result of a disease contracted as a toddler. It wasnโ€™t until she was nearly 8 years old that a teacher helped her intelligibly communicate with her family for the first time. She lived with these disabilities her entire life.
But because of her steadfast faith, …

๐Ÿ’ก 10 Ways to Teach Children to Be Thankful for Each Other

๐Ÿ’ก 10 Ways to Teach Children to Be Thankful for Each Other

Long after my husband and I are gone, I want our kids to still have each other.
As Thanksgiving approaches, Iโ€™ve been diving into Scripture to prepare my heart for a season of thankfulness. I wish gratitude was something that came naturally to me, but it rarely feels that way.
One definition of gratitude I recently read was, โ€œreadiness to show appreciation for.โ€ This definition suggests that gratitude is something I can prepare myself for, to get ready to show appreciation for the many blessings around me. …

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ‚ 4 Simple Ways to Add Significance to Your Thanksgiving

As family and friends gather, here are some ideas to create a holiday that is memorable and feasible.
Whatโ€™s your favorite Thanksgiving memory? For as long as I can remember, as soon as the crisp air chilled our cheeks, our family collected colored leaves, painted plump pumpkins, and baked apple pies.
These memories and festivities are rich, but I grew more and more tired by the seasonal check-off list. Finally I had to realize that more than a set of busy rituals, …

๐ŸŽ โš ๏ธ The Enemy of Your Marriage

๐ŸŽ โš ๏ธ The Enemy of Your Marriage

It doesnโ€™t take long for fear to replace trust, for intimacy to be broken. Just look at what happened in the first marriage.
Last week, while beginning yet another journey through the Scripture, as a recent bride I found myself reading the account of Adamโ€™s and Eveโ€™s nuptials with fresh eyes.
Iโ€™ve read it perhaps hundreds of times beforeโ€”God fashions a woman from and for the man, then personally officiates at their wedding, thus instituting the first marriage. …

๐Ÿ’ Beautiful Scars

๐Ÿ’ Beautiful Scars

I noted something refreshingly real about Princess Eugenieโ€™s choice of gown. From the front, she showed she was a princess. From the back, she showed she was a person like the rest of us.
Itโ€™s been fun to watch as two members of the British royal family have wed in the last six months. The pageantry, the tradition, the dressesโ€”I took it all in. And like the rest of the world, I noted something refreshingly real about Princess Eugenieโ€™s choice of gown. …

๐Ÿ’ฐ Investing Time With Your Children: The Challenge of 936 Pennies

The time we have with our children before they enter into adulthood is limited. We have a responsibility to use it well.
My teeth were clenched as I balanced our frantic toddler on my hip, discreetly stuffing animal crackers into his mouth. It was a desperate attempt to keep him focused and quiet, and it was failing. We had missed his nap-time window, and it was backfiring big-time.
Our 3-year-old stood next to my husband. He stared out into the crowd, …

๐Ÿšฐ โšก Gratefulness for the Small Thingsโ€ฆLike Water and Electricity

We are completely dependent on our all-powerful God, who generously gives us every gift we possess.
My husband serves as the president of a large theological seminary. We have had the privilege for 25 years of embracing and equipping students and their families as they prepare for ministry in the U.S. and around the world. One such family recently launched into the mission field in Africa along with their seven young children.
One of their early prayer requests was for consistent electricity and running water. …
